Reining Horse Equipment and Attire

When it comes to reining horse, you're going to need the right equipment and attire if you want the job to be done correctly. Reining can be performed by any horse but there are certain breeds that are considered best such as stock breeds like the American Quarter Horse. These horses are usually leaders in the field of reining horse. A good reining horse will be agile, quick and responsive to the rider's demands. The horse will need to have an excellent temperament and powerful hindquarters are also essential.

There is also certain equipment and attire that you will need to get the job done right in reining horse. The rider must use a western saddle. Spurs are allowed but no whips of any kind. Bridles need to be western-styles without a noseband or caveson. There are also very strict rules regarding what types of bits and bosals are legal so make sure you get the regulations on this as well. The bosal style hackamore is allowed.

Horses need their own protection when performing these maneuvers and usually wear splint boots or polo wraps on the cannons of their lower front legs to help protect the legs in slides and more. They may also wear skid boots on their hind fetlocks. Bell boots may be worn which wrap around the pattern and protect the hook and the coronary band on the horse. You may see these only on the front feet or you may seem them on all four legs.

The rider will also need certain gear and equipment. Riders must wear a long sleeve shirt, jeans, a cowboy hat and cowboy boots. Usually in competition they will also wear chaps. Gloves are considered optional so it depends on what the rider prefers. Riders can be male or female and traditionally there has shown little difference between the attire that males or females wear in reining competition.

In some horse shows and events, the rider or a female rider may have attire influenced by current fashion trends or may wear a decorated jacket or vest or some decorative gear in some way.
